Gua sha
Gua sha is a natural way to treat chronic pain, or excess toxicity in your system or other conditions such as poor circulation, inflammation or other physical or emotional issues. Dr. Steven Schram, an acupuncturist in NYC, uses the Chinese practice of Gua Sha along with other proven techniques such as acupuncture, tui na and qigong, to treat many conditions and put you back on the road to feeling great.
Gua sha Treatment with Dr. Steven Schram – Call 646-736-7719Gua Sha, means to “scrape away disease.” The practice involves putting repeated, gently pressured strokes along lubricated skin with a special scraping tool. Pre-oiled skin is pressed on firmly with the tool, which is then moved down the muscles along the meridian pathways in short strokes. This causes the blood to exit the peripheral (surface) capillaries and into the nearby tissue to heal it, and to free up blockages in the meridian.
Another benefit is the drawing up of toxins to the surface of the skin. As the pressure is applied, a build up of fluid moves just ahead of the scraping tool. As the fluid passes by an area, it leaves behind a vacuum which draws toxins up onto the surface of the skin. Known as “Sha,” the toxins may show as tiny red spots, or sometimes clear or colored fluid.
The treatment works on the entire system, not just the meridian, and is one of the many treatments used in Chinese medicine to heal the body of disease. Gua Sha, along with acupuncture, tui na and Qigong can be used to alleviate many kinds of discomfort, illness or pain. It has been used for tension headaches and migraines, depression and emotional issues, skin disorders, and even gastrointestinal problems. See Dr. Steven Schram, experience the benefits of Gua Sha and help your body to begin healing itself.
