Moxibustion

Dr. Steven Schram, a licensed acupuncturist in NYC, uses his training and experience in moxibustion, a form of Chinese Medicine, to heal a wide range of conditions and illnesses. Along with acupuncture, Dr. Schram practices all four branches of Chinese medicine, including herbal treatments, qigong and tui na. As part of his acupuncture treatment, Dr. Steven Schram may also utilize moxibustion.

Moxibustion is a traditional Chinese medical treatment that uses the herb mugwort. The herb, which is aged, ground up into fluff and then shaped into cones or processed into cigar shaped sticks, is burnt to produce heat. This treatment is used to open up blockages, or warm “cold” stagnant areas in the organs or along the meridians. The meridian (also called an acupuncture channel) is one of the focuses of Chinese medicine, for it is a series of connected pathways that travel throughout the entire the body. More importantly, it is the system through which our life energy, or “Qi” travels. There are many hundreds of acupuncture points, and 20 meridians which connect them. There are twelve channels along this pathway that are considered the “twelve regular meridians” that are most commonly used in treatment.

Along with acupuncture treatments, Dr. Steven Schram also performs indirect moxibustion. Acupuncture needles are inserted into the points where the flow of Qi is blocked. Then the moxa, in the form of a small clump placed on the needle and lit with a lighter. This generates a deep, relaxing sensation of heat that travels down into the cold blockage, warming it and causing it to open up. Once the Qi is flowing freely again along the meridian, the self-healing capabilities of the body take over and heal the problem areas. The treatment causes what’s known as a “localized vasodilation” an opening up of blood flow.

The treatment is deeply relaxing and, as with most forms of traditional Chinese treatments, strengthens the blood and stimulates the flow of Qi, (life force, energy) to treat disease and maintain optimum health and well being. Moxibustion has proven to be especially effective for the treatment of problems with the intestines, the female reproductive organs, and the liver and kidney.
